We’re pleased to announce that our song, In The Rooms by Richie Supa has been nominated for song of the year at the 13th Annual 2009 Prism Awards at the Beverly Hills Hotel, in Beverly Hills, CA. We would like to thank our loyal ITR members for downloading and listening.

The Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. (EIC) annually presents, in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), FX Network, and News Corporation, the PRISM Awards™, a nationally-televised awards show recognizing the accurate depiction of drug, alcohol and tobacco use and addiction in film, television, interactive, music, DVD, and comic book entertainment. Established in 1997, the PRISM Awards honor productions that are not only powerfully entertaining, but realistically show substance abuse and addiction, as well as mental health issues.

PRISM Award submissions are put through a rigorous nomination review process, judged by members of the creative community and scientific experts for entertainment value, accessibility of the message, and scientific accuracy. The production in each category that best exemplifies these three objectives is presented with a PRISM trophy at the annual event, held in Hollywood.

The PRISM Awards also has categories to recognize actors for their outstanding performances of substance abuse, addiction and mental illness onscreen, in television and feature films. These categories expand our celebration of “the art of making a difference” to include those who use themselves and their performances as instruments to show the real-life effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and mental illness on the lives of the characters they play and their loved ones.

The PRISM Awards program features several special PRISM Awards categories, such as the Larry Stewart Leadership & Inspiration Award. Each year, the Larry Stewart Award is presented to an entertainment industry professional for leading and inspiring the industry to make a difference on drug, alcohol, tobacco, and/or mental health issues. The award is named for founding EIC Board Director Larry Stewart, a veteran writer/producer/director who was a leading light in EIC’s efforts to collaborate with the entertainment industry on promoting and facilitating the accurate depiction of health and social issues.

EIC also presents a PRISM Heritage Award for the creators and/or stars of productions released before the founding of the PRISM Awards that accurately portray drug, alcohol and tobacco use and addiction, as well as mental health issues. The Heritage Award honors the legacy of accurate depiction, and spotlights creators and performers who demonstrated excellence in portraying these issues before the advent of the PRISM Awards.

The PRISM Awards encourage creators to make the most of their rights to free creative expression, while at the same time showing the reality of these health issues. As a part of the industry, EIC never wants to inhibit the creative process; however, we take pride in being the first to applaud creators who use their power and influence over their audiences wisely and responsibly, informing them while at the same time entertaining them. This is what we refer to as “the art of making a difference,” and that is what EIC and the PRISM Awards are all about.

ITR Chat Room and other New Features

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Hi Guys,

We’ve added a few new features this week to InTheRooms. The first is our chatroom - you can access it by clicking “Chat” in the menubar.  In the chatroom, there is General Chat, and also private / instant messaging. To send someone an Instant Message, click on their name on the right, and click “Private Message”. You can also create your own private chat rooms by typing “/join whatever”, and just replace ‘whatever’ with the name of your room.

In the past few weeks we noticed that a lot of members have been sharing links to videos on YouTube and the like in the discussions. We added a feature that allows members to embed videos from over 150 video websites. Just go to create a new discussion, and paste the link to the video page into the field that says “Embed a video”.  The following is a list of video sites that will work:

Sober Cafe Podcast: Christopher Kennedy Lawford

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Christopher Kennedy Lawford is author of Moments of Clarity: Voices From the Front Lines of Addiction and Recovery.  (Running Time: 20 min. 23 sec.)

lawford

On February 17, 1986, after years of addiction and self-destruction, Christopher Kennedy Lawford reached a turning point in his life, one that would mark the beginning of his long road to recovery. In his New York Times bestselling memoir, Symptoms of Withdrawal, he chronicled his deep descent into near-fatal drug and alcohol addiction, and his subsequent hard-won journey back to sobriety, which he has maintained for more than twenty years. The overwhelming response he received to his book impressed upon Lawford the number of people struggling to find their own way back from addiction and the need to share their stories. There was no easy way out for any of them. They all had to go through a moment of humility, vulnerability, and transformation and choose to take that first step of the journey. And each had their own intensely personal moment that signaled a Before and an After. The histories gathered here are the recollections of lives snatched back from the brink of a precipice so wide and deep it threatened to engulf them. As they bravely share their stories, they shed light not only on their own experiences but also on the journey we all take as human beings, looking to make sense of our world.
