Chatting in our Community

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Submitted by TheDotMack on August 19, 2009

Recently we have had some questions about our chat room that we’d like to answer.  Some members have been complaining about inappropriate conversation and behavior in the chat room, and I’d like to clear the air.

Our chat rooms are not moderated.  In fact, our entire site is not censored unless someone is saying things to intentionally hurt someone else, or posts pictures that contain nudity or are excessively vulgar.

A lot of new people come to InTheRooms.com looking for online meetings and although we do not have any scheduled or sanctioned meetings, sometimes our members have meetings in the chat room. We love this and encourage those involved to continue to share their experience, strength and hope with our online community.  That said, if people complain that in the general chat there is conversation that’s sometimes “less than spiritual”, I suggest 2 ways to resolve this.

If you are engaging in conversation that may offend others, please start a new chatroom and label it accordingly (i.e. “Just messing around”).  If you’re interested in a more spiritual chat and find that the conversation isn’t, start a new room yourself.  Lastly, if there is someone who is gratuitously abusing others, right-click on their name on the side of the chat room and report them to us.

Our intention on InTheRooms is to be an open and welcoming community, where people can spread their wings and be themselves in their own recovery.  We don’t want to have a community with “rules” that limit anyone; we don’t believe in censorship and we know our members appreciate it.   Respect others and others will respect you.

With Love,
TheDotMack

NUTRALENDA Supports ITR and the Rally For Recovery

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Submitted by Nutralenda on August 19, 2009

In its most recent philanthropic effort, Nutralenda Nutraceuticals is proud to announce its partnership with IN THE ROOMS, and its efforts to help the “recovery community” live a healthier and happier lifestyle.  In conjunction with its official launch of its Online Resource Center in September (www.rediscoveringnature.com), and the availability of its new product line in October, Nutralenda has already signed up as an official sponsor for The Rally for Recovery next month. Like this first initiative with ITR, Nutralenda hopes to continue to support this global effort and offer continuous information, education, resources, and support for people who are suffering and/or have suffered from addiction around the world.

A LITTLE MORE ABOUT NUTRALENDA

As many individuals have continuous health complications due to their past and present lifestyle choices, Nutralenda hopes to highlight and find new ways of enjoying each and every day, just a little bit more. Nutralenda Nutraceuticals is a company born from over a decade-old, scientific research effort, hoping to maximize nature’s potential to benefit and/or improve a disease sufferer’s lifestyle. The team has specialized in finding and using natural elements and properties, specifically found in plants, (mainly the Calendula flower), to produce effective and natural health benefits for people suffering from certain problems associated with liver diseases (such cirrhosis and Hepatitis), skin ailments, and even the harmful effects of casual and prescription drug use. Along with these uses specified for sufferers in recovery, Calendula has been used for hundreds of years, from the days of King Henry VIII and the Civil War, to its current uses in everything from food recipes, to the serious degenerative effects of chemotherapy and post-operative patients’ body and skin.

Calendula has also recently been recognized for its overall properties, as it received the honor of the “2008 Herb of The Year,” by the Herb Society of America. Calendula (Calendula officinalis L.) or marigold has also been suggested to benefit in minor wounds, skin infections, hair, burns, bee stings, sunburn, and suggested as an anti-septic, antiviral, and antioxidant. Some animal studies support its wound-healing claims and many creams (even though it is considered a supplement and not approved by the FDA), salves, oils, and teas, have been used for centuries containing this “power flower”. Independent studies* have claimed Calendula Officinalis reported to contain sugars, carotenoids, phenolic acids, sterols, saponins, flavonoids, resins, sterins, quinones, mucilages, vitamins, polyprenylquinones, and essential oils.  It remains today as an age-old option for individuals looking to benefit from its natural properties.

OTHER PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS

Following The Rally For Recovery, Nutralenda will also participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cure For Breast Cancer Walk, and also launch its “CERTIFIED CLEAN” campaign, which will be  their “grass roots” effort to get people to learn about, live with, and stop the spread of disease. Since epidemics such as Hepatitis C, and AIDS are on the rise, the campaign raises awareness and is a “call to action” for everyone who lives today’s modern lifestyle. We understand that unprotected sex, drug & alcohol abuse, “dirty” tattoo needles and even sun exposure can increase health risks, so this “checklist” of sorts will ask everyone to “play smart, if your going to play hard”. Most importantly earn your “certified clean” status, by letting everyone know that you are tested, care about your health, the health of others, and want to cease the spreading of disease.

With many other cool ideas and products in the pipeline, Nutralenda is happy to be supporting today’s most needed changes targeting epidemics and unhealthy lifestyles which can affect the lives of millions. As our approach is one of unity and education, look for more participation from the Nutralenda Team in the near future.

2009 A&E Recovery Rally! Register Today!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Submitted by A&E on August 19, 2009

On Saturday, September 12, 2009, during National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, A&E will host the 2nd annual Recovery Rally in New York City.  Join thousands of people in recovery from across the country, along with their friends, family and supporters to form a human bridge of recovery on the historic Brooklyn Bridge.

The rally has a tremendous line-up this year with HLN host Jane Valez-Mitchell as our MC and a free public concert by musical legend Smokey Robinson!  The event will begin in Foley square, continue with a walk across the historic Brooklyn Bridge and culminate in Cadman Plaza Park where Smokey Robinson will perform songs from his new album “Time Flies When You’re Having Fun”

For additional details and to register for the rally, please visit www.therecoveryproject.com or call 646-723-0937.

Addiction is America’s number one public health problem.  More than 22 million Americans struggle with addiction to alcohol and other drugs, yet fewer than 10% receive the treatment they need partly because of stigma and lack of awareness.  The Recovery Rally seeks to help change this.  As research from the Partnership for a Drug-Free America has shown, raising awareness that addiction is a disease and that recovery is possible can help to reduce stigma that prevents those dealing with substance abuse from seeking treatment.

The Power of 10

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Submitted by TheDotMack on August 11, 2009

September is National Recovery Month and InTheRooms.com has teamed up with an organization called Informed Families, the organization that is so influential in education and prevention in Florida schools.  I was sitting in a meeting today at the InTheRooms loft, discussing how we can get our members to take a stand for recovery and join us at the Rally for Recovery on September 12.  We truly believe it is so important to show the world that Recovery is possible; not just in meetings as a way of conveying the spiritual principle of hope to the newcomer, but to society as a whole in order to reduce the stigma that plagues us all as a unified community.

Some people think, “I’m only one person. How can I make a difference?” The power of a single person is that they can work with others to gain momentum for the cause. What would happen if you asked 10 people to come with you to the Rally? What would happen if they asked 10 people to join them as well? The success of InTheRooms as being the largest online global recovery community in a mere 9 months since its inception has been a cause of this action.

If you have already registered for the Rally For Recovery, I would like you  to invite 10 of your friends to join you as we all take a stand in the community, ask them to bring 10 people as well, and so forth. The more people that attend the rally, the louder our voice will be.

This rally is going to be a family event, everyone is welcome - those in recovery, family and friends of those in recovery, and those who support recovery.  If you haven’t already registered, please click here.

Thanks and with love,
TheDotMack (Alex N.)

Gorski on Relapse: A New Blog In The Rooms

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Submitted by TGorski on August 11, 2009

Throughout my career people have been asking me questions about addiction.  Some of the things they want to know are: What is addiction?  Why do some people get addicted and not others?  Is addiction is caused entirely by the drug and then why do some people experiment with drugs and not get addicted? Why do people start using drugs?  What do they want to get from the drug using experience? Why do some people keep using drugs and can’t stop without treatment while others seem to be able to quit when circumstances change in their lives without seeking treatment of any kind?

The most important questions are these: What are the symptoms of addiction and what causes them?  If I am addicted, what is recovery and what do I need to do to get into recovery?  Why do some people relapse?  Are their things that I can do to recognize the early warning signs of relapse and then take steps to get back into recovery?  What resources are available to people who know they are addicted that can help them get into recovery?

I have been in recovery for many decades and have worked for nearly 40 years in all aspects of addiction.  I have always specialized in people who relapse, because I have seen the depression of failure and the bad treatment they often receive from other people because they went back to using alcohol and other drugs.
