Dr. Oz’s go-to interventionist shares his method at free events hosted by Hanley Center in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 30, 2010) Brad Lamm, a renowned interventionist who’s appeared several times on The Dr. Oz Show, will host two of his widely popular CHANGE seminars in South Florida on April 21 and 22. Beginning at 6:30 pm, his seminar on April 21 will be held at Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter and his seminar on April 22 will be held at Florida International University’s Kovens Conference Center at the Biscayne Bay Campus in Miami. The free events are hosted by Hanley Center, a non-profit addiction recovery center in West Palm Beach nationally recognized for its treatment of alcohol and drug abuse.

Lamm’s 70-minute informational and inspirational program shares real-life stories and provides expert guidance on how change begins in the lives of the addicted, and the crucial roles of friends and family in the process. Guests will learn how to recognize if a loved one needs professional help, and learn what tools are necessary to move their loved one into or at least closer to a recovery plan.  Lamm will also sign copies of his new book, “How to Change Someone You Love” from St. Martin’s Press that emphasizes the value of helping loved ones now, instead of waiting for them to hit bottom – which can take years – or to try and change on their own.

In recovery since 2003 for alcohol and drug abuse, Lamm has helped thousands of people and their families to change. He is a Board-Registered interventionist who developed the “Invitation2Change” method of intervention, which differs from the more common, confrontational style called the Johnson Method by inviting the addicted person into a family-centered, on-going process focused on respect and love, instead of coercion and surprise.

Reservations are requested. To RSVP, please call (561) 832-3231 or email  dana at codpr.com. Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus is located at 5353 Parkside Drive in Jupiter, Fla. Total Abstinence: Is it really necessary?

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Submitted by InTheRooms on April 7, 2010

Because the first step of AA states a particular chemical, Alcohol, is it OK to smoke pot, take mood or mind altering chemicals when prescribed by a doctor, or simply use anything other than alcohol? Most AA members will tell you that complete abstinence is a requirement, however a vocal minority will always quote the first step and say “They haven’t had a drink today.”

Most of us believe, a drug is a drug is a drug, and the definition of “sobriety” is complete abstinence from all mood or mind altering substances.

On the other side of the spectrum, many people are being released from treatment centers still taking medications like suboxone or methadone. These people regularly attend meetings and are sometimes even trusted servants. Is this moving forward in recovery, or simply setting a poor example for the impressionable newcomer? By nature, we’re always going to seek the easier softer way.

Being a member of AA or NA, do you believe that you have to be abstinent from ALL drugs, just Alcohol, or any type of drug replacement therapy in order to truly be in recovery? What is your opinion?

ITR Book of The Month: The 12 Step Buddhist

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

From Publishers Weekly: According to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse, almost 10 percent of people aged 12 or older needed treatment for drug or alcohol problems in 2006. That astonishing number suggests a need for books such as this, written by recovering drug and alcohol addict Littlejohn, who is also a student of Buddhism. The author, who has also studied psychology and research methods, has most definitely been there. Using the Buddhist idea of attachment as a key insight into addiction, Littlejohn correlates the 12 steps of recovery programs with Buddhist ideas and practices, drawing from both Zen and Tibetan traditions. This approach can especially benefit those who may have trouble with more conventional understandings of a Judeo-Christian God as a Higher Power, since 12-step programs depend on acceptance of such a power. Some of Littlejohn’s practical exercises-certain Tibetan visualizations, for example-can be abstruse, and an appended glossary could provide more help with Buddhism, issues that more rigorous editing could have addressed. But the author has guts and clarity; this book is a welcome beacon on the troubling ocean of addiction.

More Reviews:

“The 12-Step Buddhist is a unique synthesis of the traditional 12-Step model and the liberating wisdom of Dharma….This personal presentation of the tools Littlejohn used to find his own liberation from addiction is certainly never boring, and well worth reading.” — Mandala Magazine

“The 12-Step Buddhist is one of those rare books that transcends genres by seamlessly integrating the 12-step approach, Buddhist principles, and a compelling personal struggle with addiction and a quest for spiritual awakening.” — Donald Altman, M.A., LPC, author of Living Kindness and Meal by Meal

“If the 12-Step program leads to recovery, Buddhist practice and philosophy can provide the spiritual underpinnings needed to stabilize that recovery. [Darren Littlejohn's] interpretation of the 12 Steps as seen through the lens of this wisdom tradition is fascinating and useful. A very practical and inspired guide.” — Susan Piver, author of How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life

“This book is written not based on theory or assumption, but by a person who actually went through the experience of recovery and from that experience has seen the benefits of this system as a way to help other people who are facing the same circumstances. This will be an important contribution to the literature of Buddhism and of recovery in the West.” — Yangsi Rinpoche, Tibetan Buddhist teacher and president of Maitripa Institute
