Anna d event

Submitted by MrClean on April 27, 2012

On Thursday night, we hosted our first “Celebrities in the Rooms” event with Anna David and I think everyone that attended will agree that it was a spectacular success. We hope to periodically offer a chance for our members to get “up close and personal” with authors, musicians, actors and artists that are in Recovery. Our InTheRooms video platform seems to be ideally suited in allowing a wonderful forum for “give and take” with some well known personalities.

Anna David, Executive Editor of TheFix.com, successful author of 4 books, and television dating personality, started the series off right. Her self deprecating sense of humor, coupled with her ability to describe complicated emotions with ease, made the evening go by very quickly. We had many requests to have her back again, even before she was through with the hour. The good news, especially for those that missed this event, is that Anna immediately agreed to return!

Our video platform allowed members of the audience to share some personal experiences and ask Anna about some of her own issues with recovery. We even had one member tell us that seeing Anna on television last year gave him the courage to get into Recovery! Anna was happy to tell us that more of her books were sold after appearing on our site than from her time on The Today Show! You guys ROCK!

Animal Attraction, Anna’s latest mini-memoir, is available on Amazon.com for only $1.99 and FREE for Prime members! You don’t actually need a Kindle to read it either, so don’t let that stop you.

Once again, let me thank Anna David for appearing with us InTheRooms, as well as all of you that attended this event. We can’t wait to do this again. Stay tuned!

You talk, we listen.

Tee contest

Submitted by TheDotMack on April 20, 2012

InTheRooms would like to invite its members to submit T-Shirt designs for the next limited edition InTheRooms T-Shirt! We plan on having a new shirt once every month or so, and thought it would be a great idea if our members could contribute their artwork and ideas to create an InTheRooms branded shirt that encompasses recovery as a whole (neither clean nor sober, simply recovery).

The winner will receive $100 cash and the printed t-shirt with their design on it, and 2 runners up will receive a FREE t-shirt as well.

Please email submissions to support@intherooms.com before May 15, 2012 to qualify for the contest.

Designs can be anything, must include In The Rooms in name and / or likeness, the ITR Tree if you’d like or the likeness of the tree, and anything at all recovery related. The sky is the limit.

Thanks and with love,
The InTheRooms Team

A Design For Living

Design for living

Submitted by Sara on April 20, 2012

“I’d always believed that a life of quality, enjoyment, and wisdom were my human birth right and would be automatically bestowed upon me as time passed. I never suspected that I would have to learn how to live – that there were specific disciplines and ways of seeing the world I had to master before I could awaken to a simple, happy, uncomplicated life.” – Dan Millman

I was born in a little African country called Malawi. I don’t remember too much about those childhood years but looking back at family pictures shows how uncomplicated and simple that way of life was. We had a little cottage on the lake and my brother and I spent weekends in dugout canoes, fishing with the locals and exploring the unspoilt, natural wonders of beautiful Lake Malawi. We attended the local school and there was no discrimination of race or social status.

Then circumstances changed my life forever. We left for South Africa – never to return. My parents had no choice but to put me into a boarding school and at the age of seven, I was confused and scared. In a new country torn apart by apartheid, I could not understand why the very same people, who had been my friends, were treated with such disrespect. My parents had always believed in discipline but now my life had a stricter set of rules and I was punished severely if they were not adhered to. This is where all my emotional insecurities began.

Lack of encouragement and love was my fate. As I grew up, the more I tried to please, the more that was expected of me in return. I learned that nothing you do is ever good enough, however hard you try. Today I can appreciate the fact that I had an opportunity to attend one of the best schools in the country but at the time I felt like I was a misfit amongst my wealthy friends. I never felt that I really belonged anywhere.

First year college introduced a whole new life to me – freedom and alcohol. I thrived on it. I could be whoever I wanted to be and when life threw me lemons, I grabbed the salt and tequila! The more society put pressure on me, the more I made myself invisible with alcohol. Alcohol gave me confidence and a new meaning to life. Powerful, cunning, baffling – I hid so well behind those bottles that no one, including myself, could see what damage it was actually doing to my life.

When I look back now I can see the progression of my illness. Alcohol dictated who I spent my time with. It became more important than the needs and desires of those I loved. It became more important than my health. Alcohol made me self-abusive and unconsciously abusive toward others. It made me dishonest and disconnected from the world around me. Driven by a hundred forms of fear, self-delusion, self-seeking, and self-pity I became physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually ill.

Today I am so grateful for recovery. I will not regret my past for that has moulded me into what I am striving to become today. There is no place for resentment in my life. I have taken my inventory, noted my character defects and made my amends and will continue to do so, on a daily basis, so I can grow spiritually. Through prayer I find the courage to face any fears and obstacles that may block my thoughts to a positive attitude. I still have growing pains but I will not wallow in self-pity and ego, but rather put my energy into reaching out to others who are still suffering.

Recovery offers me a simple design for living. In the past I just existed. Life should not be about discrimination of race or wealth but rather compassion, love and kindness. It is not about how hard you fall, but the fact that you get back up and learn from it. I cannot change others opinions and expectations but I can change me – from the inside out. I have learnt to take a deep breathe, put my hand on my heart and smile. It takes just twelve little steps and one day at a time – it really can be so simple and uncomplicated!

Anna d event

Submitted by MrClean on April 20, 2012

I’m really pleased to announce an exciting event taking place next Thursday night at 9pm EST. It will be in our Video Meeting Calendar. Please take a moment to mark this date and time so that you don’t miss it!

Our dear friend Anna David is the Executive Editor of theFix.com. She’s also the very talented author of 4 fantastic (recovery related) novels and a nationally recognized as a “dating expert” on numerous TV shows. Anna will be joining us to discuss her latest Kindle Single; “Animal Attraction” (roughly 30 pages). This mini memoir is about Anna’s personal recovery and the role her cats played in the process. Anna has a deliciously wry sense of humor and has an uncanny ability to describe the ups and downs of early recovery in a way that makes you feel like you’re with her in the room. If you’re a pet owner or not, you’ll “get” this book in a heartbeat, but if you’re a CAT OWNER, you might feel as though this was written about you!

I’m really looking forward to this event and I hope you join us. We have scheduled this discussion to take place between the 8pm AA meeting and the 10pm NA meeting so that everyone can attend. The book is $1.99 on Amazon but its FREE if you have an Amazon Prime account!

Anna will be available for questions and answers so please go and check out "Animal Attraction’ as well as any of her other books. If you have any questions for Anna but are too shy to get on camera, we will make arrangements for taking some written questions.

Looking forward to seeing you there! Kenny P.

Thanks and with Love,
The InTheRooms Team

An Evening With Anna David

A Special LIVE VIDEO EVENT discussing her new Kindle Single, Animal Attraction.

April 26th, 2012 - 9PM EST / 6PM PST

Click to Buy Book for only $1.99

Anna David never expected to end up a crazy cat lady. The Executive Editor of The Fix as well as a successful author (Party Girl, Bought, Reality Matters, Falling For Me) and dating expert for numerous television shows (including The Today Show, The CBS Morning Show and G4’s Attack of the Show), David had every reason to imagine that at this point in her life, she’d be sharing her bed with a man and not two four-legged furballs. In Animal Attraction, the author that The New York Post credits with creating the subgenre “Chick Lit With a Message” shares the unusual journey she took from fun-loving party gal to obsessive cat mom (with the Instagram photos and YouTube videos to prove it). Did incessant cocaine abuse and her former 24–7 party house atmosphere screw up David’s first cat during her so-called formative years? Did her second cat really get her sober? This uproarious, poignant, and painfully honest tribute to love and recovery answers those questions and more. A delightful gem that’s sure appeal to pet (and people) lovers everywhere.

Expectations Are Premeditated Resentments

Expectations

Submitted by JoyceL on April 13, 2012

Honestly, of all the valuable things I learned a couple years ago when I was in rehab, the above is the most important of them all.

Examining my expectations and then letting go of any that weren’t reality based was the first step in removing a lot of stress from my life. I was never satisfied. I always felt that things weren’t up to par, that I was settling for less, that I deserved better but my unique specialness was going unrecognized. I sabotaged perfectly good relationships once the honeymoon glow wore off because I had this crazy idea that True Love ™ always meant feeling madly infatuated every day for the remainder of your days. I thought happiness meant feeling constantly on top of the world.

Nothing ever measured up. At size 6, with my abs showing, a flat belly and a breast lift, working out religiously six days a week, I still thought I was fat.

I published a book, a short story, interviews, articles, and I still thought I was unappreciated and undiscovered as a writer.

I’d receive student evaluations at work, and everybody in my classes would have great things to say about me, except for one student who had a problem. I would obsess over that one student.

My own expectations made me continually resentful and feeling shortchanged by life.

One thing we often did in rehab was to go around the table and announce something we could be grateful for that day. Hokey, I know. But if you do it enough times, the message starts to sink in. Way more things are right than wrong. Count your blessings. Relish them. Learn to be content.

Now, nothing is wrong with expectations as long as you keep them realistic and are aware you are harboring them. Me, I’ve learned to do a subtle shift that has made a lot of difference: turn expectations into hopes. That way I’m not dashed if they don’t come to fruition.

It has done wonders for my peace of mind and for my ability to accept things–and even to appreciate them–just the way they are.

Do You Meditate?

Meditation

Submitted by MrClean on April 13, 2012

*If a person’s basic state of mind is serene and calm, then it is possible for this inner peace to overwhelm a painful physical experience. – The Dalai Lama
*

Many Addicts and Alcoholics have been to hell and back before finding their way into the rooms of recovery. We are often broken people, struggling to find a inner healing power through practicing the 12 steps. There’s a spiritual component to a quality recovery program that’s hard for some people to get in touch with. Most people with long term recovery will tell you about the importance of the 11th step in maintaining a spiritual commitment. What are you doing to get connected each day? Are you starting your day off with a spiritual reading?

We have been asked to have the ITR Daily Meditations easier to read. Members have also asked us to cut down on the amount of email received by InTheRooms. You will now have access to the Daily Meditations right on your home page! The second part of this new design, which is coming soon, will allow our members to make comments on each meditation. It can be a wonderful way to start your day!

Thanks for your input. We are constantly striving to make this your home for all things Recovery related. Please continue to give us your feedback and we will continue to listen to your ideas! We sincerely hope that this makes your day start off a little better!
